Winyanboga Yurringa

Geelong Performing Arts Centre are hosting the Victorian premiere of Winyanboga Yurringa from 17 to 20 August after a premiere season at Carriageworks in Sydney.

Paying tribute to Aboriginal women in our communities and their deep connections to the land and each other.

Featuring six women of different ages and backgrounds leave the city and return to country, to come to terms with their present, their past and their connections to each other.
The women eventually discover that this isn’t any old camping trip and that their
connection to country and each other runs deeper than they could ever have imagined.

Written and directed by Yorta Yorta/Kurnai woman Andrea James. Winyanboga Yurringa was inspired by the iconic 1980s television mini-series Women of the Sun.

It was developed when Andrea was commissioned to write a new episode for stage. Living in the city at the time, she began interviewing her circle of female friends and travelled her homeland in Yorta Yorta country to talk to women there.  It was later developed into a stand-along full-length play. Its also features video portraits by Bindi Cole, a celebrated Wathaurong artist.

The cast include Matilda Brown, Kylie Coolwell, Alexis Lane, Angeline Penrith, Tessa Rose and Pam Young.

Winyanboga Yurringa is a play about the intergenerational pulse of Aboriginal women and exposes the complexity and beauty of women’s business and our enduring connection to country.
