In 2016, Terrain toured regional Western Australia and South Australia, and continues in Victoria and Tasmania during 2017. Terrain will be performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat for one night only on 11 February.
Presented by Bangarra Dance Theatre, the Indigenous Australian contemporary dance company which is celebrating its 28th year. Stephen Page, Artistic Director was the recipient of the JC Williamson Award in 2016.
After having its world premiere season in 2012, Terrain won two Helpmann Awards for Best Ballet/Dance Work and Best Female Dancer in a Dance or Physical Theatre Work for dancer Deborah Brown.
Terrain was first full-length piece for Bangarra. Originated on Arabunna land, it explores the relationship of Indigenous people to country and how landscape becomes a second skin, inspired by the timeless beauty of Lake Eyre in South Australia.
Choreographed by Frances Rings, this work was her sixth for the dance company. The music was composed by the late David Page, set designs by Jacob Nash, costumes by Jennifer Irwin and lighting by Karen Norris.
Bangarra Dance Theatre ensemble includes Kaine Sultan-Babij, Waangenga Blanco, Deborah Brown, Glory Tuohy-Daniell, Tyrel Dulvarie, Tara Gower, Rika Hamaguchi, Rika Hamaguchi, Elma Kris, Yolanda Lowatta, Rikki Mason, Leonard Mickelo, Daniel Riley, Jasmin Sheppard, Beau Dean Riley Smith, Luke Currie-Richardson and Tara Robertson.
